Preserving residual value: maintenance that protects the value of your truck
A truck is an investment, and as with any investment, you want to get as much value back as possible when you sell it. Good maintenance not only keeps your vehicle reliable on the road, it is also the most direct way to protect its residual value. These points make the difference when reselling or exporting.
Keep the service history complete
Nothing convinces a buyer more than a complete, verifiable maintenance history. Keep all invoices and service reports and make sure the intervals have been followed properly. A truck with a complete file sells faster and at a higher price than an identical vehicle without paperwork, simply because the buyer takes less risk.
Follow the prescribed intervals
Changing the oil on time, replacing filters and having the driveline inspected prevents wear that turns out expensive later. The large, costly components in particular, such as the engine, gearbox and exhaust aftertreatment system, benefit from consistent maintenance. A well-maintained driveline is the first thing a serious buyer looks at.
Pay attention to the tyres
Tyres represent considerable value and say a lot about how a vehicle has been treated. Ensure even wear by keeping the alignment and tyre pressure in order, and rotate them where necessary. A set of tyres with plenty of tread directly and visibly increases the resale value.
Protect the chassis and bodywork
Rust is one of the biggest destroyers of value. Keep the chassis clean, tackle incipient corrosion straight away and repair paint damage before it spreads. A well-kept appearance inspires confidence and suggests, rightly so, that the invisible maintenance is in order too.
The small things count
- A clean, well-kept cab goes a long way towards making a good first impression;
- Working lights, windscreen wipers and dashboard instruments remove doubt for the buyer;
- Fix small defects before the sale; in a negotiation they weigh more heavily than their actual repair costs;
- Document major repairs, such as an overhaul, because they actually increase the value.
